Numbers 31:47

Listen to this article

“Even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.”

Context:Numbers 31 recounts the Israelites’ battle against the Midianites. The Lord commanded Moses to take vengeance on the Midianites for their role in leading the Israelites into sin and idolatry. After the battle, Moses and Eleazar the priest counted the spoils of war, including people, animals, and goods. In Numbers 31:47, we see how Moses handled the spoils.

Distribution of Spoils:According to God’s command, Moses took a portion of the spoils from the Israelites’ half and gave it to the Levites. The Levites were the designated tribe responsible for the service and maintenance of the tabernacle. This distribution was a way to acknowledge the Levites’ special role and provide for their needs.

One Portion of Fifty:The text states that Moses took one portion of fifty from the spoils. This suggests that out of every fifty persons or animals captured, one was set apart for the Levites. This allocation ensured that the Levites received a fair share of the spoils in proportion to the rest of the congregation.

Obedience to God’s Command:Moses acted in accordance with the Lord’s instructions. The allocation of spoils was not arbitrary but based on God’s specific command. Moses’ obedience demonstrates his commitment to fulfilling God’s directives and honoring the Levites as the tribe entrusted with the sacred duties related to the tabernacle.

Support for the Levites:The Levites did not receive a land inheritance like the other tribes of Israel. Instead, their portion came from the tithes and offerings of the people, as well as certain portions of the spoils. This arrangement allowed the Levites to focus on their priestly responsibilities and serve as intermediaries between God and the people.

Symbolism and Application:The distribution of spoils to the Levites carries symbolic significance. It reminds us of the importance of providing for those who serve in the house of God and dedicating a portion of our resources to support the work of ministry. It also highlights the principle of obedience to God’s commands, even in matters of resource allocation.

In summary, Numbers 31:47 showcases Moses’ obedience to God’s command by allocating a portion of the spoils of war to the Levites. This act supported the Levites in their duties as keepers of the tabernacle and served as a reminder to provide for those who serve in God’s house. It teaches us about obedience to God’s commands and the importance of supporting ministry work.
