Numbers 31:7

Listen to this article

“And they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses, and they slew all the males.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and contains a detailed account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, the Israelites were preparing to wage war against the Midianites.

Historical Background:Prior to this event, the Israelites had been seduced by the Midianites into worshiping their gods and engaging in sexual immorality. As a result, God sent a plague among the Israelites, and 24,000 people died. To purify the people and avenge the Lord’s honour, God commanded Moses to take a thousand men from each of the twelve tribes of Israel and go to war against the Midianites.

God’s Command:The phrase “as the Lord commanded Moses” emphasizes the divine authority behind the Israelites’ actions. God instructed Moses to lead the Israelites in war against the Midianites, ensuring they carried out His judgment.

War against the Midianites:The Israelites waged war against the Midianites, specifically targeting the males among them. The reason for this was likely twofold: Firstly, it was to remove any immediate military threat that the males posed, as they were often the warriors and defenders of their communities. Secondly, it was a judgment from God upon the Midianites for leading the Israelites into sin and idolatry.

It is important to note that the Bible frequently records instances of warfare, reflecting the historical context in which it was written. However, as believers, we must interpret these passages in light of the teachings of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, which emphasize love, forgiveness, and seeking peace.

Application:

  • Faithful obedience to God’s commands:The Israelites followed God’s instructions to wage war against the Midianites. As believers, we should strive to be obedient to God’s commands, trusting in His wisdom and guidance.
  • Consequences of sin:The judgment upon the Midianites serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of leading others into sin. It highlights the importance of remaining faithful to God and avoiding actions that can lead others astray.
  • Balancing justice and mercy:Although the passage focuses on the destruction of the Midianite males, it is essential to remember that God is both just and merciful. We should seek to embody these attributes in our own lives, understanding the need for justice while also extending mercy and forgiveness.
  • Understanding cultural context:It is crucial to interpret passages like these in their historical and cultural context. While the Bible records instances of warfare, it is vital to view them through the lens of the entire biblical narrative, which ultimately points to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.

Remember, studying the Bible as a whole and seeking a deeper understanding of its teachings can provide a more comprehensive perspective on any given passage.
