“But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.”
Context: Numbers 32 is part of the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. At this point, the Israelites were encamped on the east side of the Jordan River, near the land of Moab. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half of the tribe of Manasseh, had abundant livestock and saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for their livestock to graze. They approached Moses and asked for permission to settle in these lands instead of crossing the Jordan to enter the Promised Land with the rest of the Israelites.
