Listen to this article

And Moses said vnto them, If ye will doe this thing, if ye will goe armed before the Lord to warre, Numbers 32:20 (KJV)

Context: Numbers 32 records an episode in the Israelites’ journey toward the Promised Land. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, together with half the tribe of Manasseh, approached Moses with a request to settle on the east side of the Jordan River rather than crossing into Canaan. They found the land suitable for their livestock and desired it as their possession. Moses initially questioned their motives, fearing that their settlement might discourage the other tribes from entering the land. After the tribes clarified that they intended to fight alongside their fellow Israelites, Moses agreed to their request on the condition that they would go armed before the LORD, for then the LORD would be with them.

Commitment to God’s Cause: In Numbers 32:20 Moses challenges the tribes, saying, “If ye will do this thing, and if ye will go armed before the LORD, then shall the LORD be with you.” This statement underscores the necessity of fulfilling one’s commitment to God’s cause before enjoying personal gain. By going armed before the Lord, the tribes would demonstrate dedication to defending the rest of Israel in the forthcoming conquest of Canaan, reminding believers that God’s mission must take priority over personal desires and comfort.

Unity and Solidarity: Moses’ condition highlights the importance of unity among the tribes of Israel. Though the eastern tribes sought to settle apart, their agreement to fight alongside their brethren affirmed a commitment to maintain communal solidarity and support the other tribes in the conquest of the Promised Land. The passage therefore encourages believers to stand together as a community, supporting and encouraging one another in the spiritual journey.

Fulfilling Responsibilities: The eastern tribes recognized their responsibilities within the larger Israelite community. By pledging to fight in the upcoming battles, they acknowledged the need to fulfill their obligations and contribute to God’s overarching plan. This teaches the importance of being faithful to one’s role within the body of Christ, using gifts and talents to further God’s kingdom.

Application: Though the verse refers to a historical situation, timeless principles emerge. Christians are called to serve God faithfully, fulfill responsibilities within the church and broader community, and prioritize God’s mission above personal comfort. This may involve sacrificing personal desires for the greater good and remaining steadfast in God’s cause amid challenges.

Overall, Numbers 32:20 emphasizes commitment to God’s cause, unity among believers, faithful responsibility, and the priority of God’s mission over personal ambition. It invites each reader to examine personal life, ensuring that devotion to God’s purpose remains central in daily walk with Him.
