Numbers 32:25

Posted on 2 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.”

Context:The book of Numbers records the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter (Numbers 32), the tribes of Gad and Reuben approached Moses with a request regarding their inheritance of land.

Background and Request:Before entering the Promised Land, the tribes of Gad and Reuben, who had abundant livestock, noticed that the land of Jazer and Gilead, on the eastern side of the Jordan River, was suitable for their livestock (Numbers 32:1-4). They requested to settle in those lands instead of crossing the Jordan to the western side with the rest of the Israelites.

Moses’ Initial Response:Moses initially expressed concern about this request, fearing that the tribes of Gad and Reuben would shirk their responsibilities in the upcoming conquest of the Promised Land (Numbers 32:6-15). He reminded them of the consequences their ancestors faced when they refused to enter the land forty years earlier (Numbers 32:8-13).

Commitment to Help:In response to Moses’ concerns, the tribes of Gad and Reuben made a solemn promise in Numbers 32:16-19. They assured Moses that they would leave their families and livestock in the fortified cities of Gilead, cross over the Jordan alongside their fellow Israelites, and participate in the conquest of the land until it was completely settled.

Verse Analysis:Numbers 32:25 records the tribes of Gad and Reuben reaffirming their commitment to Moses. They assured him, “Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.” This statement reaffirms their promise to fulfill their obligations, obey Moses’ orders, and actively participate in the conquest of Canaan.

Lessons and Application:

  • Faithful Commitment:The tribes of Gad and Reuben demonstrated a commendable level of commitment. They recognised the importance of fulfilling their responsibilities and honouring their promise to Moses and God.
  • Honouring Leadership:Their respectful attitude towards Moses shows the significance of submitting to godly leadership and recognising the authority God has placed over us.
  • Fulfilling Promises:Keeping one’s word is vital in maintaining trust and integrity. The tribes of Gad and Reuben understood the importance of honouring their commitments, which is a valuable lesson for believers today.
  • Active Participation:The tribes’ willingness to leave their families and livestock behind and actively engage in the conquest of the Promised Land highlights the importance of active involvement in fulfilling God’s purposes and serving His kingdom.

In summary, Numbers 32:25 showcases the tribes of Gad and Reuben reaffirming their commitment to obey Moses and actively participate in the conquest of the Promised Land. Their faithfulness in keeping their promises serves as a valuable lesson for believers today regarding the importance of honouring commitments, submitting to godly leadership, and actively participating in fulfilling God’s purposes.
