Numbers 32:26

Posted on 2 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And they went and came to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.”

This verse is part of a larger narrative found in the book of Numbers, specifically in the context of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness towards the Promised Land.

At this point, they had arrived near the border of Canaan and were preparing to enter and take possession of the land promised to them by God.

In the preceding verses, the Israelites had been grumbling and complaining against God and Moses due to the hardships they faced in the wilderness.

As a consequence of their complaints, God sent venomous serpents among the people, and many were bitten and died.

In Numbers 32:26, a group of people, who were part of the tribes of Reuben and Gad, approached Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the princes of the congregation.

They acknowledged their sin of speaking against the Lord and Moses.

They realised that their rebellious attitude had brought about God’s judgment in the form of the serpents.

Their response to this situation is significant.

They humbly admitted their wrongdoing and sought forgiveness and deliverance from the Lord.

They recognised that only God had the power to remove the serpents and restore their well‑being.

Consequently, they requested Moses to intercede on their behalf by praying to the Lord.

Moses, as the mediator between God and the people, fulfilled their request.

He acted as a representative, interceding and seeking God’s mercy and intervention in response to their repentance.

Moses’ prayer for the people demonstrates his role as a spiritual leader who intercedes for the community before God.

This verse highlights several important principles that can be applied to our own lives today:

Acknowledging sin:The people openly admitted their sin and rebellion against God. It is essential for us to recognise and confess our own sins before God, seeking His forgiveness.

Humility and repentance:The people humbled themselves before God, understanding their wrongdoing and turning away from it. Genuine repentance involves not only acknowledging sin but also desiring to change and aligning our lives with God’s will.

Seeking intercession:The people approached Moses to intercede on their behalf. Similarly, we can approach Jesus Christ, who is our High Priest and Mediator, to intercede for us before God the Father (Hebrews 4:14-16).

The power of prayer:Moses’ prayer had a significant impact. It is a reminder of the power of prayer in our lives. Through prayer, we can bring our concerns, needs, and repentance before God, seeking His guidance, forgiveness, and deliverance.

In conclusion, Numbers 32:26 presents a crucial moment in the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness.

The people, after recognising their sin and its consequences, humbly sought forgiveness and deliverance from God.

Moses, as the intercessor, prayed on their behalf.

This verse reminds us of the importance of acknowledging sin, practising humility and repentance, seeking intercession, and relying on the power of prayer in our relationship with God.
