Numbers 32:35

Posted on 2 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah.”

Context:Numbers 32:35 is part of a larger passage in the book of Numbers that describes the allocation of the conquered lands to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh. These tribes requested to settle on the east side of the Jordan River, which was outside the Promised Land. Moses granted their request on the condition that they assist the other tribes in conquering Canaan before settling in their own inheritance.

Meaning and Significance:

  • Allocation of Land:Numbers 32:35 mentions several cities that were allocated to the tribes of Reuben and Gad as part of their inheritance. These cities were Atroth, Shophan, Jaazer, and Jogbehah. This verse serves as a historical record of the specific cities that were given to these tribes.
  • Faithfulness to Commitments:The request made by the tribes of Reuben and Gad to settle on the east side of the Jordan required them to fulfill their commitment to assist their fellow Israelites in conquering the Promised Land. This demonstrates the importance of honoring commitments and fulfilling obligations within the community of believers.
  • Sharing in the Promised Blessings:While Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh chose to settle outside the Promised Land, they were not exempt from participating in the conquest of Canaan. By assisting the other tribes in securing their inheritances, they shared in the blessings of the Promised Land. This highlights the principle of unity and mutual support within the community of God’s people.
  • The Faithfulness of God:The distribution of land and the fulfillment of God’s promises to the Israelites underscore God’s faithfulness. He ensured that each tribe received their inheritance as He had promised. This verse serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to His people, both in the physical land allocation and in fulfilling His promises in our lives today.

Application:

  • Faithful Commitment:Just as the tribes of Reuben and Gad were expected to honor their commitment to assist in the conquest, we should also strive to be faithful to our commitments within the Christian community. Whether it is serving in ministry, supporting fellow believers, or participating in the mission of spreading the Gospel, our faithfulness reflects our devotion to God and our love for others.
  • Unity and Support:The tribes of Reuben and Gad demonstrated unity and support by helping their fellow Israelites. Likewise, as followers of Christ, we are called to support and encourage one another. We should be willing to lend a helping hand, bear one another’s burdens, and work together to advance the Kingdom of God.
  • Trusting in God’s Promises:The fulfillment of God’s promises in the distribution of land should inspire us to trust in His promises for our lives. Just as He was faithful to the Israelites, He remains faithful to us today. We can rely on His promises, knowing that He will guide us, provide for us, and lead us into the abundant life He has planned for us.

In conclusion, Numbers 32:35 serves as a historical record of the cities allocated to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. It also reminds us of the importance of faithful commitment, unity, and trust in God’s promises.
