Numbers 32:37

Listen to this article

“And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim.”

Numbers 32:37 is a verse from the book of Numbers, which recounts the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, we find a reference to the tribe of Reuben and their construction of three cities: Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kirjathaim.

To better understand the significance of this verse, let’s explore its context within the larger passage. In Numbers 32, we encounter the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh making a request to Moses and the Israelite leaders.

These tribes had abundant livestock and noticed that the land east of the Jordan River, called the land of Jazer and Gilead, was suitable for their livestock to graze. Therefore, they approached Moses with a proposition. They requested to settle in that land rather than crossing over the Jordan River to enter Canaan, the Promised Land.

Initially, Moses was hesitant and worried that their decision might discourage the rest of the Israelites from pursuing the conquest of Canaan. However, after the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh made a solemn vow to join the other tribes in fighting for the land of Canaan, Moses granted their request. He allowed them to settle in the land of Jazer and Gilead on the condition that they fulfilled their promise to help their fellow Israelites conquer the Promised Land.

In Numbers 32:37, we see that the children of Reuben took on the responsibility of building three cities in the land they had chosen. Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kirjathaim became significant cities within their territory, providing dwellings and urban centers for the people of Reuben.

This verse highlights the faithfulness of the children of Reuben in honoring their commitment to Moses and the Israelite community. It also underscores the importance of fulfilling one’s obligations and promises, even when given permission to deviate from the original plan.

Overall, Numbers 32:37 serves as a reminder of the significance of integrity and keeping one’s word, even when circumstances change or alternative paths are taken. It encourages us to uphold our commitments and remain steadfast in our responsibilities to both God and others.
