Numbers 32:38

Posted on 2 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and focuses on the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness. In this particular chapter, the tribes of Reuben and Gad approached Moses with a request to settle in the land of Gilead, which was east of the Jordan River. They were cattle breeders and saw that the land was suitable for their livestock. After negotiations and assurance of their commitment to join the other tribes in conquering the Promised Land, Moses granted their request. Now, let’s dive into Numbers 32:38:

Symbolism of name changes:In this verse, we see that the names of certain cities were changed. The act of changing names holds significance throughout the Bible. It often signifies a change in identity, purpose, or spiritual significance. In this context, the name changes reflect the transformation of these cities as they came under the possession of the Israelites. The renaming may have served as a symbol of their new ownership and identification with the people of God.

Shibmah:Shibmah was one of the cities mentioned in this verse. Its name means “fragrance” or “sweet odor.” While the verse doesn’t provide further details about Shibmah, it’s possible that this name change carried a symbolic meaning. It could represent the transformation of a place once associated with pagan practices into a city under the influence of God’s people, emitting the fragrance of righteousness and worship.

Faithfulness to God’s promises:This verse reminds us of the faithfulness of God to fulfill His promises. The Israelites were on the brink of entering the Promised Land, and God had assured them of victory and possession of the land. By witnessing the renaming of cities and the possession of new territories, the Israelites were reminded of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to them. This can encourage us today to trust in God’s promises, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill them in His perfect timing.

The importance of honoring commitments:The tribes of Reuben and Gad had made a commitment to Moses and the other tribes to assist in the conquest of the Promised Land before settling in their allotted territory. By fulfilling their promise, they demonstrated their faithfulness and commitment to the community of God’s people. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring our commitments, both to God and to one another.

Application:As we reflect on Numbers 32:38, we can learn from the symbolism of name changes and be reminded of God’s faithfulness. We can also strive to honor our commitments, remaining faithful to our promises to God and to our fellow believers. Let us be people of integrity, walking in the footsteps of those who have gone before us and faithfully following God’s leading. Remember, studying the Bible is a lifelong process, and it’s beneficial to explore additional commentaries, study guides, and seek guidance from pastors and other trusted sources to gain a deeper understanding of the text.
