Numbers 32:40

“And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular passage, the Israelites are nearing the end of their forty years of wandering in the wilderness, and they are preparing to enter the land that God had promised to give them.

Analysis:

Significance of the Land:The land of Gilead was a region east of the Jordan River, and it was part of the inheritance that God had promised to the Israelites. It was one of the territories assigned to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh. This land was known for its fertility and suitable for raising livestock.

Moses’ Role:In this verse, we see that Moses played a significant role in allocating the land to the tribes. He gave the land of Gilead specifically to Machir, who was the son of Manasseh. Moses acted as a mediator between God and the people, ensuring that the distribution of the land was done in accordance with God’s instructions.

Manasseh’s Inheritance:The tribe of Manasseh was given a double portion of land because Joseph, the father of Manasseh, had received a double portion of blessing from his own father, Jacob (Genesis 48:22). As a result, Manasseh received territory both east and west of the Jordan River.

Faithfulness and Stewardship:This verse highlights the importance of stewardship and the responsibility that comes with receiving blessings from God. Moses entrusted the land of Gilead to Machir, who was a representative of the tribe of Manasseh. It was now Machir’s responsibility to cultivate and take care of the land as a faithful steward.

Application:As believers, this passage reminds us of the significance of our inheritance in Christ. Just as the Israelites were given a promised land, we have received spiritual blessings and promises in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). We are called to be faithful stewards of the gifts, talents, and resources God has entrusted to us, using them for His glory and the benefit of others.

In conclusion, Numbers 32:40 highlights Moses’ role in allocating the land of Gilead to Machir, the son of Manasseh. It emphasises the importance of stewardship and reminds us of our responsibility to be faithful stewards of the blessings and inheritance we have received from God.
