Numbers 33:8

Posted on 4 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And they departed from before Hahiroth, and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, and went three days’ journey in the wilderness of Etham, and pitched in Marah.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and provides a historical account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this passage, the Israelites are leaving Hahiroth and continuing their journey through the wilderness towards the land of Canaan.

Departure from Hahiroth:Hahiroth was a location near the Red Sea where the Israelites camped after crossing the Red Sea. It was at Hahiroth that they witnessed God’s miraculous deliverance as He parted the Red Sea, allowing them to pass through on dry land while the pursuing Egyptian army was destroyed by the waters. This event marked the freedom of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

Passage through the Sea:After departing from Hahiroth, the Israelites passed through the midst of the sea. This refers to the crossing of the Red Sea, which is one of the most well‑known and significant events in the Bible. God miraculously opened a path through the sea for the Israelites, allowing them to escape from the Egyptians who were pursuing them.

Wilderness of Etham:After passing through the Red Sea, the Israelites entered the wilderness of Etham. This was a vast desert region located on the eastern side of the Red Sea, between the sea and the land of Canaan. The wilderness of Etham was part of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.

Three days’ journey:The Israelites traveled for three days in the wilderness of Etham. The mention of the three days could signify a specific duration of their journey or simply provide a general timeframe. The wilderness journey was a test of their faith, as they had to rely on God’s provision and guidance during this challenging period.

Arrival at Marah:The Israelites eventually pitched their camp at a place called “Marah”. The name “Marah” means “bitter.” At this location, they encountered bitter water, which was undrinkable. This event tested their faith and trust in God’s provision.

The passage highlights several key themes, including God’s deliverance, His miraculous intervention, the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness, and their reliance on God’s provision and guidance. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to His people and their need to trust and depend on Him, even in challenging circumstances.

Overall, Numbers 33:8 provides a snapshot of the Israelites’ journey from Hahiroth through the Red Sea and into the wilderness of Etham. It invites us to reflect on God’s power and faithfulness and encourages us to trust in Him, even in the midst of difficult and uncertain times.
