Numbers 34:15

Posted on 8 March 2024
Listen to this article

“The two tribes, and the half tribe, shall have their inheritance on this side Jordan, toward the sunrising, in the land of Canaan.”

Context:The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance on this side Jordan near Jericho eastward, toward the sunrising.

This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Numbers that describes the division of the land of Canaan among the twelve tribes of Israel.

In this particular verse, Moses is delineating the allocation of land for the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

During the time of Moses, the Israelites had been journeying through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. The Promised Land, Canaan, was just within reach, and the Israelites were preparing to settle there.

However, before they entered the land, the territory had to be divided among the tribes. According to the instructions given by God to Moses, the land east of the Jordan River was assigned to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of the tribe of Manasseh.

This land was situated near Jericho and extended eastward, toward the sunrise. It was a fertile region suitable for livestock and agriculture.

It is important to note that this division of land was part of God’s covenant with the Israelites, fulfilling the promise He made to their forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The allocation of specific territories to each tribe ensured that they had a place to settle and establish their inheritance.

  • God is a faithful promise-keeper:The division of the land highlights God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises. He had assured the Israelites that they would possess the land of Canaan, and He remained true to His word.
  • Fairness and equity:The distribution of the land demonstrates God’s sense of justice and fairness. Each tribe received its portion according to its size, needs, and inheritance rights.
  • Purposeful allocation:The assigned land was suitable for the specific tribes. The region east of the Jordan River was well-suited for Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, given their abundance of livestock.

Overall, Numbers 34:15 serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and His careful provision for His people.
