Numbers 34:27

Posted on 9 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And the prince of the tribe of the children of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.”

Numbers 34:27 is a verse from the book of Numbers, which primarily focuses on the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness after their deliverance from Egypt. In this particular verse, Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, is mentioned as the prince or leader of the tribe of Judah.

To gain a better understanding of this verse, it is helpful to look at its context:In Numbers 34, God provides Moses with instructions regarding the division of the land of Canaan among the twelve tribes of Israel. This division was to take place after the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land.

In verses 16 to 29, the chapter lists the names of the twelve leaders, one from each tribe, who were appointed to assist in dividing the land. Each leader is referred to as a prince or chief. The verse you mentioned, Numbers 34:27, designates Caleb as the prince:or leader of the tribe of Judah.

Caleb’s leadership role is significant because of his faithfulness and trust in God. Earlier in the Israelites’ journey, when Moses sent twelve spies to explore the land of Canaan, only Caleb and Joshua returned with a positive report, expressing their confidence in God’s ability to give them victory over the inhabitants of the land (Numbers 13:30; 14:6-9).

Caleb’s faith in God earned him a special promise from the Lord. In Numbers 14:24, God declared, “But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went, and his seed shall possess it.”

Therefore, when it comes to Numbers 34:27, it serves as a reminder of Caleb’s leadership position among the children of Judah. His appointment as the prince:of Judah signifies the recognition of his faithfulness and his dedication to following God wholeheartedly.

Overall, this verse highlights the faith and devotion of Caleb, who remained steadfast in his trust in God, even in the face of challenges. It serves as an example for us today to trust in God and follow Him faithfully, knowing that He honors those who put their faith in Him.
