Numbers 34:5

Posted on 8 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And the border shall fetch a compass from Azmon unto the river of Egypt, and the goings out of it shall be at the sea.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Numbers where God instructs Moses to command the children of Israel regarding the division of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes. God outlines the specific boundaries of the land they were to possess.

In Numbers 34:5, the focus is on describing the southern border of the land. The verse mentions two important geographical landmarks: Azmon and the river of Egypt. Azmon is believed to be a location in the southern portion of Canaan, near the western border of Edom. The river of Egypt refers to the Wadi el-Arish, a riverbed or a seasonal stream that marked the border between Egypt and Canaan.

The phrase “the border shall fetch a compass” indicates that the border would encircle or encompass the region from Azmon to the river of Egypt. The term “goings out” refers to the points where the border ends, which, in this case, would be at the sea, likely the Mediterranean Sea.

From a broader perspective, this verse highlights the precision and intentionality of God’s plan for the division of the land among His people. The detailed boundaries provided by God ensured that each tribe would have its designated portion within the Promised Land.

As we reflect on this verse, we can draw several spiritual lessons. Firstly, it reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. The borders described in Numbers 34 were part of God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and now, God was bringing His people into the land He had promised to give them.

Secondly, the idea of boundaries reminds us of the importance of order and structure. God is a God of order, and His instructions regarding the division of the land reflect this aspect of His character. As believers, we can also apply this principle in our lives by establishing godly boundaries that align with His Word, helping us stay within His will and purpose.

Finally, this verse can serve as a reminder of God’s sovereignty over the land and His control over the geographical and political aspects of our world. He is the one who determines borders and territories, and ultimately, He is in control of all things.

In summary:Numbers 34:5 outlines the southern border of the Promised Land, emphasizing God’s faithfulness, order, and sovereignty. This verse invites us to consider God’s promises, align our lives with His boundaries, and trust in His control over all things.
