Numbers 35:19

Listen to this article

"The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him."

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah. It contains the account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In Numbers 35, God instructs Moses to set aside cities of refuge for the Israelites, where someone who unintentionally kills another person can find protection from the avenger of blood.

Avenger of Blood:In ancient Israelite culture, the avenger of blood was a close relative of a person who was killed. It was their responsibility to avenge the death by taking the life of the murderer. This practice was rooted in the concept of blood vengeance and was aimed at maintaining justice within the community.

Protection and Justice:The verse in question, Numbers 35:19, addresses the responsibility of the avenger of blood. It states that when the avenger meets the murderer, he has the right to slay him. This verse reflects the principle of retributive justice, where the punishment matches the crime committed. By allowing the avenger of blood to execute the murderer, God established a system to ensure that justice was served.

Purpose of the Cities of Refuge:The institution of cities of refuge, mentioned in the preceding verses of Numbers 35, provided a place of sanctuary for someone who unintentionally caused the death of another person. These cities were strategically located throughout the land of Israel. The purpose of the cities of refuge was to prevent the avenger of blood from taking revenge on the unintentional killer and to offer them protection until they could receive a fair trial.

Understanding the Verse:Numbers 35:19 emphasizes the seriousness of unintentional manslaughter. While the avenger of blood had the right to seek justice, this verse does not condone vigilantism or arbitrary killings. The context of the cities of refuge and the judicial process surrounding unintentional manslaughter highlight the importance of a fair trial and allowing justice to be administered in a controlled manner.

Application for Today:While the concept of the avenger of blood and the cities of refuge might not be directly applicable in modern legal systems, the underlying principles of justice, protection, and accountability remain relevant. Today, we rely on established legal systems to ensure that justice is served. However, as individuals, we can draw from this passage a reminder of the importance of upholding justice, seeking accountability, and working towards a fair and equitable society.

Remember that studying the Bible comprehensively requires considering the surrounding verses, understanding the historical and cultural context, and seeking guidance from reliable biblical resources.
