Numbers 35:22

Listen to this article

“But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him anything without laying of wait,”

This verse is part of the instructions given by God to Moses concerning the cities of refuge for those who unintentionally caused the death of another person. The cities of refuge were designated as places of sanctuary where individuals could seek protection from those seeking revenge or retribution.

In this specific verse, God addresses the scenario where someone unintentionally causes the death of another person without any premeditated malice or hatred. If a person accidentally kills someone without harboring ill will or premeditation, the circumstances surrounding the incident are examined to determine the appropriate response.

It is important to note that the verse assumes an unintentional act, emphasizing the absence of enmity or malice. The situation described here suggests an accident or an act committed without prior intention.

Context:This verse sets the foundation for the subsequent verses, which establish the rules and regulations regarding the cities of refuge and the role of the congregation in determining the innocence or guilt of the person responsible for the death.

The following verses in Numbers 35 outline the process that unfolds after this incident, including the responsibility of the community in investigating the matter, the role of witnesses, and the judgment that is to be rendered.

Numbers 35:23-24 continues:

“Or with any stone, wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm: Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments.”

These verses clarify that if someone unknowingly uses an object that causes the death of another person, and it can be proven that there was no enmity or intent to harm, the congregation is responsible for conducting a fair trial and rendering a judgment. The goal is to ensure that justice is served without allowing personal vengeance or unfounded accusations to prevail.

In summary, Numbers 35:22 addresses the scenario in which someone unintentionally causes the death of another person without harboring malice or premeditation. It emphasizes the need for a fair trial and judgment by the congregation, as outlined in the subsequent verses. This passage highlights God’s concern for justice and the importance of distinguishing between intentional and unintentional acts in matters of life and death.
