Numbers 35:3

Posted on 9 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.”

This verse is part of a larger passage that deals with the allocation of cities for the Levites, who were the tribe of priests and assistants to the priests in the Old Testament. In this particular verse, the focus is on providing the Levites with cities to dwell in, as well as allocating land for their livestock and possessions.

Here are a few key points we can draw from this verse:

  • Provision for the Levites:The Levites were not given a specific territory like the other tribes of Israel. Instead, they were dispersed among the other tribes and were supported by the offerings and tithes brought by the people. The cities given to the Levites served as their dwelling places and were intended to meet their needs.
  • Cities and Suburbs:The Levites were provided with both cities and their surrounding suburbs. The cities were likely centres of religious worship and instruction, while the suburbs were allotted for the Levites’ livestock, goods, and other possessions.
  • Recognition of their role:By assigning cities to the Levites, the Israelites recognised the importance of the Levitical priesthood and their responsibilities in serving God and the people. The Levites were responsible for various duties related to the tabernacle, including offering sacrifices, conducting ceremonies, and teaching the law to the people.
  • Practical provision:By providing the Levites with land for their livestock and goods, the Israelites ensured that the Levites would have the necessary resources for their sustenance. This provision allowed the Levites to focus on their spiritual duties without being burdened with agricultural or other livelihood-related tasks.

Overall, Numbers 35:3 emphasises the allocation of cities and surrounding areas for the Levites, demonstrating God’s provision for their needs and acknowledging their unique role in serving Him and the people of Israel. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of recognising and supporting those who are dedicated to the service of God.
