Numbers 36:11

Posted on 9 March 2024
Listen to this article

“For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married unto their father’s brothers’ sons.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, and it primarily focuses on the journey of the Israelites from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In Numbers 27, we learn about the daughters of Zelophehad who approached Moses with a concern regarding their inheritance since their father had died without any sons.

Inheritance Laws:In the ancient Near Eastern culture, inheritance was typically passed down to male heirs. However, the daughters of Zelophehad, realizing that their father’s inheritance would be lost to their tribe if they did not receive any portion, approached Moses and the leaders to seek clarification and justice.

Advocacy for Justice:The daughters of Zelophehad demonstrated courage and initiative by approaching Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the whole congregation to present their case. They argued that their father should not be deprived of his inheritance merely because he had no sons. This action reveals their commitment to preserving their family’s legacy and ensuring fairness in the distribution of land.

A New Precedent:Moses brought the daughters’ case before the Lord, and God affirmed their request, instructing Moses to grant them their father’s inheritance as their possession. This decision set a precedent in Israelite society, establishing the right of daughters to inherit their father’s estate if there were no sons.

Marriage Within the Tribe:After the decision, the daughters of Zelophehad were married to men within their own tribe, ensuring that their inheritance would remain within their tribe’s territory. Numbers 36:11 specifically mentions the names of the daughters and their marriages to their father’s brothers’ sons.

Importance of Family and Legacy:This passage emphasizes the significance of preserving family lineage and ensuring fairness in inheritance laws. It shows that God is concerned about justice and equality, even in matters of property and inheritance. By allowing the daughters of Zelophehad to inherit their father’s land, God demonstrated His concern for the welfare of individuals and their families.

Application:This passage encourages us to advocate for justice and fairness in our own lives. It reminds us that God values equality and is concerned about the well-being of every individual, regardless of gender or societal norms. Additionally, it highlights the importance of family and the need to preserve and pass on our spiritual heritage to future generations.

In conclusion, Numbers 36:11 demonstrates how the daughters of Zelophehad sought justice, and God affirmed their request to inherit their father’s land. This passage teaches us about the value of justice, equality, and the preservation of family legacy.
