Numbers 4:19

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and it continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, God is giving instructions to Moses regarding the responsibilities of the Kohathite clan of the Levites in the tabernacle service.

The Importance of Proper Approach:The verse emphasises the importance of approaching the holy things of God in a correct manner. The phrase “that they may live, and not die” reveals the severity of the consequences if they did not follow God’s instructions. The holiness of God’s presence required a reverent and careful approach.

Aaron and His Sons:The specific individuals mentioned in the verse, Aaron and his sons, were from the priestly lineage. They were chosen by God to carry out the duties related to the tabernacle and the sacrifices. Their role was significant in ensuring the proper handling of the holy things.

Appointing Each to His Service and Burden:The verse also highlights the need for organisation and division of labour within the tabernacle service. Each person had a specific task and responsibility assigned to them. The Levites were responsible for carrying and transporting the sacred objects of the tabernacle. God instructed Aaron and his sons to assign each Levite to their designated service and burden, ensuring that everyone had a role to fulfil.

Lessons to Learn:

  • Reverence and Respect for God:The verse reminds us of the importance of approaching God with reverence and respect. We should not take His holiness lightly but recognise the sanctity of His presence. It encourages us to approach God with a humble and contrite heart.
  • Godly Order and Organisation:The verse demonstrates the significance of order and organisation in serving God. Each person had a specific role and responsibility, contributing to the overall functioning of the tabernacle. This reminds us of the value of teamwork and unity within the body of Christ, as every member has a unique part to play.
  • Obedience to God’s Instructions:The Levites were required to follow God’s instructions precisely to avoid dire consequences. It teaches us the importance of obedience to God’s Word in our own lives. By following His commands, we can experience His blessings and avoid the negative consequences of disobedience.

Overall, Numbers 4:19 provides insights into the proper approach to the holy things of God, the significance of organisation, and the importance of obedience in our service to Him. It encourages us to approach God with reverence, embrace order and organisation in our endeavours, and prioritise obedience to His Word.
