Numbers 4:22

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families.”

Context:The book of Numbers is part of the Pentateuch, which comprises the first five books of the Bible. Numbers focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In chapter 4, the Lord gives instructions to Moses regarding the organisation and responsibilities of the Levites in the tabernacle.

The Sons of Gershon:Gershon was the eldest son of Levi, who was one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel). In Numbers 4, the Lord specifically instructs Moses to take a census of the sons of Gershon, who were responsible for the transport and care of the curtains, coverings, and other materials used in the tabernacle.

Census:The purpose of the census was to count the number of eligible males within the tribe of Gershon who were fit for service. This would aid in organising their duties and assigning specific responsibilities to each family. The census was important for maintaining order and ensuring that each family had a designated role in the tabernacle’s functions.

Importance of Families:The verse emphasises that the census was to be taken “throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families.” This highlights the significance of family and the organisation of responsibilities within the community. Each family had its unique role to play, and their combined efforts contributed to the smooth functioning of the tabernacle.

Lessons for Today:

  • Organisation and Order:The passage teaches us the importance of organisation and orderliness in the work of God. Assigning specific responsibilities and roles to different individuals or families ensures that tasks are accomplished effectively.
  • Unity and Cooperation:The census highlights the need for unity and cooperation within the community. Each family had its part to play, and their collective efforts contributed to the overall functioning of the tabernacle. Similarly, in our modern context, unity and cooperation among believers are crucial for the proper functioning of the Church.
  • Appreciation of Individual Contributions:Each family within the tribe of Gershon had unique skills and responsibilities. This teaches us to value and appreciate the diverse gifts and contributions that individuals bring to the work of God. No role is insignificant, and every person has a part to play in advancing the kingdom of God.

In conclusion, Numbers 4:22 teaches us about the organisation and responsibilities of the sons of Gershon within the tabernacle. It emphasises the importance of family, order, unity, cooperation, and appreciating individual contributions in the work of God.
