Numbers 4:31

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, the Lord gives specific instructions regarding the responsibilities of the Levites, particularly the descendants of Kohath, in carrying and taking care of the tabernacle and its components during their journey in the wilderness.

The Charge of Their Burden:The verse begins by stating, “And this is the charge of their burden.” The “their” refers to the descendants of Kohath, who were responsible for transporting the most sacred items of the tabernacle. This verse highlights the specific duties assigned to them.

All Their Service in the Tabernacle:The verse continues, “according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation.” The Kohathites had the responsibility of caring for and transporting the essential elements of the tabernacle, which included the boards, bars, pillars, and sockets. These items were crucial for setting up and assembling the tabernacle, which was the place of worship and the dwelling place of God’s presence among the Israelites during their journey.

The Boards, Bars, Pillars, and Sockets:The verse concludes by mentioning the specific components that the Kohathites were responsible for carrying. These items were essential for the construction and stability of the tabernacle structure. The boards provided the framework, the bars connected the boards, the pillars supported the structure, and the sockets held the pillars firmly in place. The Kohathites had the significant responsibility of carrying, protecting, and assembling these components whenever the tabernacle was to be moved.

Lessons from Numbers 4:31: This verse teaches us several important lessons:

  • Assigned Responsibilities:The Lord assigned specific responsibilities to different groups of people within the community. Each person had a role to play in the functioning of the tabernacle. Similarly, in our lives, God has given each of us unique talents and gifts, and it is important for us to use them for His service.
  • Reverence and Care:The Kohathites’ role in carrying the sacred items reminds us of the importance of reverence and care when dealing with things that are set apart for God’s purposes. We should treat God’s Word, His house, and His work with respect and honour.
  • Teamwork and Cooperation:The Kohathites had to work together to carry the different components of the tabernacle. This emphasizes the significance of teamwork and cooperation in accomplishing God’s work. We, too, should recognize the value of working together in unity to fulfill God’s purposes.

In conclusion, Numbers 4:31 highlights the responsibilities of the Kohathites in carrying and caring for the various components of the tabernacle. This verse teaches us about assigned responsibilities, reverence and care, and the importance of teamwork in serving God’s purposes.
