Numbers 4:37

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.”

Numbers 4:37 is part of a larger passage that describes the duties and responsibilities of the Kohathites, one of the Levitical clans, in relation to the tabernacle. The tabernacle was the portable sanctuary constructed by the Israelites in the wilderness under the guidance of Moses.

In this particular verse, we see that the families of the Kohathites were numbered or counted, indicating that they were organised and set apart for specific service in the tabernacle. Their role was to assist in the sacred tasks related to the tabernacle and the worship of God.

It’s noteworthy that Moses and Aaron carried out the numbering of the Kohathite families according to the commandment of the Lord. This emphasises the importance of obedience to God’s instructions in the organisation and functioning of the tabernacle and the priesthood. Moses, as the appointed leader of the Israelites, acted as the mediator between God and the people, conveying God’s commandments and overseeing their implementation.

This verse teaches us the significance of order, obedience, and proper delegation of responsibilities in the service of God. The Kohathites were entrusted with specific duties related to the tabernacle, and their role was crucial in facilitating the worship and sacrifices of the Israelites. They were chosen and prepared for this service according to the commandment of the Lord.

As we reflect on Numbers 4:37, we can apply the principles of organisation, obedience, and faithful service in our own lives. Just as the Kohathites were dedicated to their specific tasks, we are called to serve God faithfully and diligently in the areas where He has placed us. By seeking to align ourselves with God’s commandments and fulfilling our responsibilities with a willing heart, we can honour Him and contribute to the work of His kingdom.
