Listen to this article

These be those that were numbred of the families of the sonnes of Merari, whom Moses & Aaron numbred according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses. Numbers 4:45 (KJV)

The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various laws, instructions, and narratives that highlight the Israelites’ experiences during their wilderness wanderings.

The Sons of Merari: In this passage, the focus is on the families of the sons of Merari. Merari was one of the three sons of Levi, the tribe dedicated to the service of the tabernacle. The descendants of Merari were assigned specific duties related to the transportation and assembly of the tabernacle and its furnishings.

Numbering the Families: Moses conducted a census of the families of the sons of Merari under God’s instruction. This numbering was done according to the word of the Lord and carried out by Moses himself. The purpose of this census was to establish order, organization, and assign responsibilities within the Levitical tribe.

Spiritual Lessons:

Obedience to God’s Word: Moses numbered the families of Merari “according to the word of the LORD.” This emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. It demonstrates the need to align our actions and decisions with God’s revealed will, seeking His guidance in all aspects of life.

Divine Organization: The numbering and assigning of responsibilities to the families of Merari show God’s desire for order and structure within His people. Each family had a specific role to play in the service of the tabernacle, contributing to the overall functioning of the community. Similarly, in the body of Christ today, God desires order and unity, with each member utilizing their gifts and talents for the common good.

God’s Care for Details: The fact that God instructed Moses to count the families of Merari individually highlights God’s concern for the smallest details. He knows each person and values their contribution, no matter how seemingly insignificant. It reminds us that God is intimately involved in our lives, aware of our circumstances, and interested in our well‑being.

Application:

Obedience: We should strive to obey God’s instructions as revealed in His Word. By seeking His guidance and aligning our lives with His will, we position ourselves to experience His blessings and fulfill our purpose.

Unity and Service: Like the families of Merari who worked together to support the tabernacle, we are called to serve God and one another in unity. Each of us has unique gifts and abilities that can be used to contribute to the well‑being of the body of Christ.

Attention to Details: God cares about the smallest aspects of our lives. We should not neglect the seemingly insignificant tasks or people, recognizing that our faithfulness in the little things can have a significant impact on God’s kingdom.

Remember, the book of Numbers offers much more depth and additional lessons throughout its chapters. It is beneficial to read and study the surrounding passages to gain a comprehensive understanding of the context and message of the book.
