Numbers 7:19

Listen to this article

“He offered for his offering one silver charger, the weight whereof was a hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various laws, regulations, and historical events that occurred during this period. In Numbers 7, the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel bring offerings for the dedication of the altar, as instructed by God.

Analysis:

  • Offerings and Sacrifices:In ancient Israelite culture, offerings and sacrifices played a significant role in their worship of God. These acts were meant to express devotion, gratitude, and seek atonement for sins. In this verse, the focus is on the offering brought by a specific leader from one of the tribes of Israel.
  • Silver Charger and Bowl:The leader mentioned in Numbers 7:19 brought two silver vessels as part of his offering. A charger is a large platter or dish used for serving food, while a bowl is a smaller vessel. Both were made of silver, which was a valuable and precious metal. The charger weighed 130 shekels, and the bowl weighed 70 shekels.
  • Fine Flour and Oil:These vessels were filled with a mixture of fine flour and oil, which was a common combination for the meat offerings. The fine flour represents purity and could be made from wheat or barley. Oil, often olive oil, symbolizes anointing, consecration, and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
  • Significance:The offering described in this verse was not just an ordinary act but part of the dedication of the altar. It demonstrated the leader’s commitment to God and participation in the sacred rituals of worship. The offering represented his submission, surrender, and desire to seek God’s favour and blessings.

Application:

  • Giving Our Best to God:The leader’s offering reminds us of the importance of giving our best to God. Whether it is our time, talents, or resources, God deserves our wholehearted devotion. We should not hold back but offer our most valuable possessions and dedicate them to His service.
  • Worship as a Lifestyle:The act of offering described in Numbers 7:19 was part of the Israelites’ worship. Similarly, worship should be an integral part of our lives as believers. It’s not limited to a specific time or place but extends to every aspect of our existence. Our daily choices, actions, and attitudes should reflect a heart of worship.
  • Sacrificial Living:The offering of fine flour and oil required the leader to give up something valuable. It reminds us that true worship often involves sacrifice. As followers of Christ, we are called to live sacrificially, offering ourselves as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). This includes surrendering our desires, ambitions, and even comforts for the sake of God’s kingdom.
  • The Importance of Dedication:The offering in Numbers 7:19 was part of the dedication of the altar. Similarly, we need to dedicate ourselves wholly to God. This means consecrating our lives, time, and resources for His purposes. It involves setting ourselves apart from worldly influences and committing to live according to His will.

Conclusion:Numbers 7:19 reminds us of the significance of offering our best to God and living lives dedicated to Him. It encourages us to embrace worship as a lifestyle, engage in sacrificial living, and prioritise our dedication to God. By doing so, we honour Him, grow in our relationship with Him, and experience the abundant life He has for us.
