Numbers 7:25

Posted on 16 November 2023
Listen to this article

“His offering was one silver charger, the weight thereof was a hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them were full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and provides a detailed account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various laws, regulations, and narratives regarding the organisation, conduct, and worship of the Israelites.

The Tabernacle Offerings:Numbers 7 describes the offerings brought by the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel at the consecration of the Tabernacle. Each tribe’s leader brought specific offerings, including various animals, wagons, and other items needed for the service of the Tabernacle. Numbers 7:25 specifically focuses on the offering brought by the leader of the tribe of Naphtali.

The Offering:The leader of the tribe of Naphtali brought two silver vessels as his offering. The first was a silver charger (a large shallow dish) weighing 130 shekels, and the second was a silver bowl weighing 70 shekels. Both vessels were filled with fine flour mixed with oil, which was a common offering for a meat (grain) offering in the Tabernacle.

Symbolism and Significance:The offerings made by the leaders of the tribes had symbolic and practical significance. They demonstrated the leaders’ commitment and dedication to the service of God and the community. The silver vessels represented wealth and value, reflecting the honour and importance attributed to the offerings. The fine flour mixed with oil symbolised a pure and pleasing offering to God.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Willingness to give:The leaders of the tribes willingly brought their offerings, setting an example of generosity and devotion. As believers, we should also be willing to give of our resources, time, and talents to serve God and support His work.
  • The value of offerings:The silver vessels mentioned in Numbers 7:25 highlight the principle of giving our best to God. Our offerings should not be mere leftovers or of little significance, but rather valuable and meaningful contributions that reflect our love and reverence for God.
  • Worship through giving:The act of offering was an act of worship. It demonstrated the Israelites’ acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty and their desire to honour Him. In our lives, giving can be an act of worship that expresses our gratitude, trust, and obedience to God.
  • The significance of purity:The fine flour mixed with oil in the meat offering represented a pure and acceptable offering. It reminds us of the importance of offering our lives in holiness and righteousness before God. Our offerings should be accompanied by a sincere and genuine heart, free from impurities and selfish motives.

In summary, Numbers 7:25 showcases the offering brought by the leader of the tribe of Naphtali during the consecration of the Tabernacle. It teaches us valuable lessons about giving, worship, and the significance of offering our best to God with sincerity and purity.
