Numbers 7:68

Listen to this article

“One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. In chapter 7, the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel each bring offerings to the newly constructed tabernacle as a dedication and consecration of the sanctuary.

Significance of the Offering:The verse mentions the specific animals offered: one young bullock, one ram, and one lamb of the first year. These animals were designated as burnt offerings, which were completely consumed by fire on the altar. Burnt offerings were a way for the Israelites to express their devotion and surrender to God. The act of offering these animals demonstrated their desire to give their best to the Lord.

Symbolism and Foreshadowing:In the Old Testament, various offerings and sacrifices were performed as a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The animals used in the burnt offerings were symbolic of the future sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. The young bullock, the ram, and the lamb of the first year symbolise Christ’s sacrificial death on behalf of humanity.

The Importance of Giving Our Best:The offering mentioned in Numbers 7:68 teaches us the importance of giving our best to God. The Israelites did not offer just any animal; they brought the finest animals, without any blemish, to present before the Lord. Similarly, we are called to give our best to God in all aspects of our lives-our time, talents, resources, and devotion. God deserves our utmost commitment and dedication.

The Concept of Sacrifice:The burnt offerings in the Old Testament required the complete surrender of the animals, which were consumed by fire. This concept of sacrifice reminds us of the need to surrender ourselves entirely to God. As Christians, we are called to offer our lives as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). This means we should be willing to let go of our own desires, ambitions, and worldly attachments, and instead submit ourselves to God’s will.

Application in Our Lives:

Giving our best:Reflect on areas in your life where you can offer your best to God. This could include your time, talents, relationships, or service to others. Seek ways to honour God with excellence and devotion in those areas.

Surrendering to God:Take time to examine your heart and identify anything that hinders your complete surrender to God. Are there areas where you are holding back? Pray and ask God to help you let go of anything that prevents you from fully submitting to His will.

Gratitude for Christ’s sacrifice:Meditate on the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Express gratitude for His selfless act of love and reflect on how it should impact your life and relationship with Him.

Remember, the verse from Numbers 7:68 reminds us of the importance of giving our best to God, the concept of sacrifice, and the need for complete surrender to His will. Through our devotion and surrender, we can experience a deeper relationship with Him and live out His purposes in our lives.
