Numbers 7:71

Posted on 16 November 2023
Listen to this article

“And every one that offered an offering of silver and brass brought the LORD’S offering: and every man, with whom was found shittim wood for any work of the service, brought it.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Old Testament and focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various laws, regulations, and accounts of their experiences during their time in the wilderness.

The Offerings:Numbers 7 describes the offerings brought by the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel during the consecration of the altar. Each leader brought specific offerings, including silver and brass. This verse emphasizes that those who had silver and brass willingly brought their offerings to the Lord.

Willingness and Generosity:The act of bringing offerings to the Lord in the Old Testament was a way for the people to demonstrate their devotion, obedience, and gratitude to God. It highlights the importance of a willing and generous heart when it comes to serving and worshiping God. The people recognized that everything they possessed ultimately came from the Lord, and they willingly gave back to Him.

Shittim Wood:The verse also mentions the contribution of shittim wood. This type of wood was used in constructing various parts of the Tabernacle, including the ark, the table of showbread, and the altar. The fact that individuals had shittim wood indicates that they were willing to provide the necessary materials for the service of the Lord.

Application:This passage reminds us of the principles of stewardship and generosity. As believers, we are called to offer our resources, time, and talents to the Lord’s work. We should willingly contribute to the service of God, whether it be through financial offerings, material resources, or utilizing our skills and abilities for His purposes. Our giving should come from a heart of gratitude and willingness, recognizing that all we have is ultimately from God.

New Testament Perspective:While this passage is specific to the Old Testament practices of offering, it is essential to understand the principles behind it. In the New Testament, we see similar teachings emphasizing the importance of giving and generosity. For example, 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV) says, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” This verse highlights the attitude of the heart when it comes to giving.

In conclusion, Numbers 7:71 highlights the willingness of the Israelites to bring offerings to the Lord, including silver, brass, and shittim wood. It teaches us about the importance of generosity, stewardship, and a willing heart in serving and worshiping God. This passage encourages us to give willingly and cheerfully, recognizing that everything we have ultimately comes from God.
