Numbers 7:89

Listen to this article

“And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, and it provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various laws, regulations, and historical events that took place during their wilderness wanderings.

The Tabernacle:The tabernacle was a portable structure built according to God’s instructions, where the Israelites worshiped and offered sacrifices. It consisted of several sections, including the Holy of Holies, which housed the ark of the covenant.

The Ark of the Covenant:The ark of the covenant was a sacred chest made of acacia wood and covered with gold. It contained the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments, symbolising God’s covenant with Israel. The ark was placed in the Holy of Holies, and the mercy seat, a cover with two cherubim, was positioned on top of it.

Moses’ Encounter:In this verse, Moses enters the tabernacle to speak with God. As he is in the presence of God, he hears a voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat, between the two cherubim. This is a significant moment because it represents God’s direct communication with Moses.

Significance:Moses’ experience of hearing God’s voice from the mercy seat demonstrates God’s accessibility and willingness to communicate with His people. It highlights the intimate relationship Moses had with God and emphasises the importance of seeking God’s guidance and direction.

Symbolism:The mercy seat, located on top of the ark of the covenant, represents the throne of God’s presence. The fact that God speaks from the mercy seat signifies His authority, holiness, and mercy. It also symbolises His desire to commune with His people and guide them in their journey.

Application:As believers, we can learn from this verse by recognising the privilege we have to approach God in prayer and seek His guidance. Just as Moses entered the tabernacle to speak with God, we can enter into His presence through prayer and experience His voice speaking to us through His Word, the Bible, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Hearing God’s Voice:Moses’ encounter serves as a reminder that God desires to speak to His people. We should cultivate a relationship with Him through prayer, studying His Word, and spending time in His presence. By doing so, we can develop an ear to hear His voice and receive guidance, comfort, and direction in our lives.

Remember, while this verse captures a specific event in Moses’ life, the Bible study should also consider the surrounding context and the overall message of Numbers to gain a deeper understanding of God’s dealings with His people during that time.
