Numbers 7:9

Listen to this article

“But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders.”

Context:The book of Numbers is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah or the Books of Moses. It provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In Numbers 7, the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel bring offerings for the dedication of the tabernacle. Each leader presents an identical offering, and their contributions are described in detail.

Explanation and Analysis:Numbers 7:9 focuses on the tribe of Kohath, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The Kohathites were responsible for the transportation of the holy objects of the tabernacle, including the Ark of the Covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, the altar of incense, and the holy utensils (Numbers 4:4-15). However, unlike the other tribes, they did not bring an offering during the dedication ceremony. The reason for this omission is stated in the verse: “because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders.” The Kohathites’ role was of utmost importance, and they had a specific task assigned to them. Their responsibility was to carry the sacred items of the tabernacle, which required special care and reverence. As a result, they were exempt from bringing an additional offering, as their service was considered their offering to the Lord. This verse highlights the division of labor among the various tribes of Israel. Each tribe had specific responsibilities related to the maintenance and functioning of the tabernacle. The Kohathites had a distinct role that focused on the physical transport of the holy items. This division of labor allowed for the smooth operation of the tabernacle and ensured that all necessary tasks were carried out effectively. This verse also teaches us the value of recognizing and honoring the different roles within the community of believers. Just as each tribe had a unique assignment, every member of the body of Christ has different gifts, talents, and callings. Some may have more visible or prominent roles, while others may serve in less noticeable capacities. Yet, every role is essential for the functioning and growth of the body.

Application:

Appreciating diversity within the body of Christ: This verse reminds us to value the different roles and gifts within the Christian community. We should recognize and appreciate the contributions of others, regardless of how visible or prominent they may be.

Faithful stewardship of responsibilities: The Kohathites were faithful in carrying out their assigned task of transporting the sacred items. Similarly, we should be diligent in fulfilling the responsibilities God has entrusted to us, whether they are prominent or seemingly insignificant.

Serving as an offering to God: Just as the service of the Kohathites was considered their offering to the Lord, we can view our service and daily activities as offerings to God. Whatever we do, whether big or small, can be done as an act of worship and devotion to Him.

Cooperation and unity: The successful functioning of the tabernacle depended on the collaboration and unity of all the tribes. Likewise, in the body of Christ, we are called to work together in harmony, recognizing that our collective efforts are essential for the advancement of God’s kingdom.
