Numbers 9:20

Posted on 4 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And so it was, when the cloud was a few days upon the tabernacle; according to the commandment of the LORD they abode in their tents, and according to the commandment of the LORD they journeyed.”

Context:The book of Numbers is primarily concerned with the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. In this particular verse, the Israelites are following the cloud, which represents the presence and guidance of God, as they travel from place to place.

God’s Guidance:The cloud that was upon the tabernacle served as a visible manifestation of God’s presence and guidance. Whenever the cloud remained stationary, the Israelites would stay in their tents, and when the cloud moved, they would journey in the direction indicated by God.

Obedience to God’s Command:The key theme highlighted in this verse is obedience to God’s command. The Israelites were expected to follow God’s leading and act according to His instructions. Their journeying or staying was completely dependent on the movement of the cloud. This demonstrates the importance of obedience and submission to God’s will in the life of a believer.

Trust and Faith:The Israelites had to trust in God’s guidance and have faith that He would lead them in the right direction. They couldn’t rely on their own understanding or make decisions based on their own desires. By following the cloud, they were acknowledging their dependence on God and their willingness to submit to His plans.

Application:The principle of obedience and trust displayed in Numbers 9:20 is relevant for believers today. We are called to listen to God’s voice and follow His leading in our lives. This requires a willingness to surrender our own plans and desires, trusting that God knows what is best for us. Sometimes, God may ask us to wait in a particular season, and at other times, He may prompt us to move forward. It is our responsibility to seek His guidance and obey His commandments.

God’s Presence:The cloud symbolizes God’s presence with His people. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is described as our guide and helper (John 14:26). Just as the Israelites had the visible cloud leading them, believers today have the Holy Spirit dwelling within them, guiding and directing their paths. It is essential for us to cultivate a relationship with God through prayer, studying His Word, and listening to His voice, so that we can discern His leading in our lives.

Remember, Numbers 9:20 encourages us to trust in God’s guidance, obey His commands, and have faith in His plan for our lives. By aligning ourselves with His will, we can experience the blessings and protection that come from following Him wholeheartedly.
