Numbers Chapter 35

Summery

Numbers 35 describes the allocation of cities to the Levites, who were the tribe responsible for the service of the Tabernacle. The Lord commanded Moses to designate 48 cities for the Levites to live in, with six of these cities being designated as cities of refuge. These cities of refuge were intended to provide a safe haven for individuals who accidentally caused the death of another person, protecting them from vengeance and ensuring a fair trial.

The chapter goes on to outline specific regulations regarding the cities of refuge. It establishes guidelines for the cities’ locations, accessibility, and the responsibilities of the Levites residing within them. Additionally, it discusses the procedure for judging cases of manslaughter, distinguishing between intentional and accidental killings.

The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of upholding justice and not tolerating murder within the community. The shedding of innocent blood defiles the land, and the Lord’s command is clear: murderers must be put to death.
