Ruth 1:13

Listen to this article

“Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.”

Context and Background:The Book of Ruth is a beautiful narrative found in the Old Testament. It tells the story of Ruth, a Moabite woman who showed exceptional loyalty and faithfulness to her mother-in-law, Naomi. This particular verse occurs in the context of Naomi’s conversation with her daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah, after the death of their husbands.

Examining the Verse:

  • The Dilemma:Naomi encourages Ruth and Orpah to return to their own families and find new husbands. She questions whether they should wait for her to raise new sons for them to marry. Naomi expresses her concern for their well-being, realizing that it would be better for them to return to their homeland rather than stay with her.
  • The Hand of the LORD:Naomi believes that the “hand of the LORD” has gone out against her. This phrase implies that she attributes her misfortunes, such as the death of her husband and sons, to God’s providential dealings. It suggests that Naomi sees her circumstances as a result of divine intervention.

Key Themes and Lessons:

  • Faithfulness and Loyalty:Ruth’s decision to remain with Naomi, even in the face of adversity, demonstrates her remarkable loyalty and faithfulness. This teaches us the importance of standing by our loved ones and supporting them during difficult times.
  • Trusting God’s Providence:Naomi’s statement about the hand of the LORD highlights the idea of trusting in God’s providence even in the midst of challenging circumstances. Although Naomi is experiencing sorrow and loss, she acknowledges that God is in control of her life and situation.
  • Sacrificial Love:Naomi’s concern for the well-being of Ruth and Orpah, even at her own expense, reveals sacrificial love. She desires the best for them, even if it means they have to separate from her. This teaches us about selflessness and prioritizing the welfare of others.

Application and Reflection:

  • Loyalty and Faithfulness:Reflect on your own relationships and consider how you can demonstrate loyalty and faithfulness to those close to you, particularly during challenging times. Seek opportunities to support and stand by your loved ones.
  • Trusting God’s Providence:When faced with difficult circumstances, remind yourself of God’s sovereignty and trust in His providential care. Understand that even in moments of hardship, God is working for your ultimate good.
  • Sacrificial Love:Examine your motives and actions, ensuring that you prioritize the well-being of others above your own desires. Look for ways to sacrificially love and serve those around you, putting their needs before your own.

Remember, the Book of Ruth is a beautiful example of God’s faithfulness and how ordinary people can play significant roles in His divine plan. By studying this verse and the entire book, we can gain valuable insights into faith, loyalty, love, and the providence of God.
