Ruth 1:15

Posted on 10 January 2025
Listen to this article

“And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.”

Context:The book of Ruth is a beautiful narrative found in the Old Testament. It tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth, who demonstrated great loyalty and faithfulness. Ruth’s mother-in-law, Naomi, had experienced significant loss in her life, and Ruth chose to accompany Naomi back to the land of Judah, despite the cultural and societal challenges she would face as a foreigner.

Loyalty and Commitment:In Ruth 1:15, Naomi is urging her daughter-in-law Ruth to return to her own people and gods, after Ruth’s sister-in-law, Orpah, had decided to do so. Naomi recognised the challenges that Ruth would face in a foreign land, among a people who did not worship the same God as Ruth. However, Ruth’s response reveals her deep loyalty and commitment to Naomi, as well as her faith in the God of Israel.

Faithfulness and Devotion:Ruth’s decision to stay with Naomi was a remarkable act of faithfulness and devotion. She was willing to leave behind her own family, culture, and gods to support and care for her mother-in-law. This demonstrated her selflessness and a willingness to embrace a new life and a new faith.

Choosing God:Ruth’s commitment to Naomi went beyond mere human loyalty. She recognised the significance of the God of Israel and made a conscious decision to follow Him. By staying with Naomi, Ruth expressed her desire to be a part of the people of God and to worship the true God.

Application:Ruth’s story teaches us several important lessons. First, it reminds us of the value of loyalty, faithfulness, and commitment, even in difficult circumstances. Ruth’s example challenges us to consider our own relationships and the ways in which we can demonstrate love and loyalty to others. Second, Ruth’s choice to follow God encourages us to prioritise our relationship with God above all else. Just as Ruth left behind her old gods and embraced the God of Israel, we should be willing to let go of anything that hinders our relationship with God and fully commit ourselves to Him.

Conclusion:Ruth 1:15 showcases Ruth’s unwavering commitment to Naomi and her decision to follow the God of Israel. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of loyalty, faithfulness, and choosing to serve God. Ruth’s story continues to inspire believers today, encouraging us to remain steadfast in our relationships and devotion to God.
