Ruth 1:17

Posted on 10 January 2025
Listen to this article

“Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.”

Context:The Book of Ruth is set during the time of the Judges in Israel. It tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who chooses to remain loyal to her mother-in-law, Naomi, after the death of their husbands. Ruth’s dedication and faithfulness become a significant theme throughout the book.

Covenantal Love:Ruth’s statement in Ruth 1:17 is a powerful declaration of her loyalty and commitment to Naomi. It reflects the deep bond and love that has developed between them. Ruth’s words express her determination to remain with Naomi, even in the face of uncertainty and adversity.

Sacrificial Love:Ruth’s commitment to Naomi goes beyond mere words. She demonstrates her selflessness by offering to remain by Naomi’s side until death. This shows Ruth’s willingness to sacrifice her own personal comfort and security for the sake of caring for Naomi.

Trusting in God:Ruth’s statement includes an oath invoking the name of the LORD. By making this vow, Ruth demonstrates her faith in God’s sovereignty and her reliance on His protection and provision. She acknowledges that their future is ultimately in God’s hands.

Foreshadowing of Christ’s Love:Ruth’s unconditional love and loyalty towards Naomi foreshadow the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. Just as Ruth was willing to give up her own life for the sake of another, Jesus willingly laid down His life for the salvation of humanity. Ruth’s commitment serves as an example of the kind of love and devotion that Christ calls His followers to exhibit.

Application:Ruth’s words challenge us to examine our own relationships and commitments. Are we willing to remain faithful and devoted to others, even in difficult circumstances? Are we willing to sacrificially love and serve others, following the example of Jesus? Ruth’s story encourages us to be selfless and steadfast in our relationships, trusting in God’s faithfulness and sovereignty.

In conclusion, Ruth 1:17 showcases the remarkable loyalty and sacrificial love of Ruth towards her mother-in-law, Naomi. It also points to the ultimate expression of love found in Jesus Christ. This verse inspires us to examine our own commitments and challenges us to demonstrate unwavering faithfulness and sacrificial love in our relationships.
