Listen to this article

"When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her."

Context:Ruth 1:18 is part of the story of Ruth, a Moabite woman who became the great-grandmother of King David. This verse occurs within the narrative of Ruth’s decision to accompany her mother-in-law, Naomi, back to Bethlehem after the death of their husbands.

Background and Setting:

  • Ruth was married to one of Naomi’s sons, but after their husbands died, Naomi decided to return to her homeland in Bethlehem.
  • Initially, Naomi urges both of her daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah, to stay in Moab and find new husbands.
  • Orpah eventually decides to return to her people, but Ruth expresses her determination to stay with Naomi and accompany her to Bethlehem.

Observations:

  • In this verse, the focus is on Ruth’s response after Naomi insists that she should return to Moab with Orpah.
  • The phrase "she was stedfastly minded to go with her" indicates Ruth’s unwavering determination to stay with Naomi, despite Naomi’s insistence otherwise.
  • The verse concludes by stating that Naomi stopped trying to persuade Ruth to stay any further.

Key Themes and Lessons:

  • Loyalty and Commitment: Ruth’s decision to stay with Naomi reveals her loyalty and commitment to her mother-in-law. She demonstrates a selfless love and devotion that transcends her own personal interests.
  • Faithfulness: Ruth’s steadfastness illustrates the importance of faithfulness, even in challenging circumstances. She remains committed to her relationship with Naomi and the God of Israel, even though she is a foreigner.
  • God’s Sovereignty: The events in Ruth’s life, including her encounter with Naomi and her subsequent journey to Bethlehem, are part of God’s divine plan. It is through Ruth’s faithfulness that God’s providential purposes are fulfilled, leading to her eventual inclusion in the lineage of Jesus Christ.

Application:

  • Demonstrating Loyalty:We can learn from Ruth’s example of loyalty and commitment. In our relationships, especially within families, it is important to show unwavering support and faithfulness.
  • Trusting in God’s Plan:Even in difficult circumstances, we should trust in God’s sovereignty and have faith that He is working out His purposes in our lives.
  • Embracing God’s Family:Ruth’s inclusion in the lineage of Jesus shows that God’s family extends beyond national and cultural boundaries. We should welcome and embrace people from all backgrounds, just as God does.

Remember that studying the Bible involves reading and reflecting on the context, themes, and lessons of the passage. It is also beneficial to explore related verses and seek guidance from trusted spiritual leaders or resources for a deeper understanding.
