Ruth 1:2

Listen to this article

“And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.”

Context:The book of Ruth is set during the time of the judges, a period of Israel’s history characterised by a cycle of disobedience, oppression, and deliverance. Ruth is a short book that tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth and her journey of faith, loyalty, and redemption.

Elimelech and Naomi:Elimelech was a man from Bethlehemjudah. During a time of famine, he took his wife Naomi and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, and migrated to the country of Moab. Elimelech’s name means “God is my king,” indicating a recognition of God’s authority. Naomi, whose name means “pleasant” or “delightful,” plays a significant role in the narrative.

The Journey to Moab:Elimelech’s decision to move his family to Moab was driven by the famine in Bethlehemjudah. Moab was a neighbouring country located east of the Jordan River. However, moving to a foreign land had spiritual implications since Moab was known for its idolatry and immoral practices. It demonstrated a lack of trust in God’s provision and a departure from their ancestral land.

Moab:The country of Moab was inhabited by the descendants of Lot, Abraham’s nephew (Genesis 19:37). The Moabites were not part of the chosen people of Israel, and they had a history of conflict with Israel. Despite this, God’s sovereignty is evident in the story of Ruth, as He works through unexpected circumstances to accomplish His purposes.

Application:The book of Ruth begins with a series of challenging circumstances: famine, migration to a foreign land, and the loss of family members. While Elimelech’s decision to move to Moab might have seemed logical from a human perspective, it ultimately led to tragedy. This passage reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance and remaining faithful to His covenant even in times of difficulty.

God’s Faithfulness:Although the situation may seem bleak at this point in the story, it is important to remember that God is working behind the scenes. The book of Ruth showcases God’s faithfulness in the midst of personal tragedies and dire circumstances. It serves as a reminder that God can redeem even the darkest situations and bring about unexpected blessings.

Family Dynamics:Ruth 1:2 introduces us to the characters of Elimelech, Naomi, Mahlon, and Chilion. It highlights the significance of family relationships and the impact they have on individual decisions. Furthermore, it sets the stage for the subsequent events in the book, revealing the importance of family ties, loyalty, and the role of redemption in their lives.

Overall, Ruth 1:2 sets the foundation for the events that unfold in the book of Ruth. It showcases the challenges faced by the characters and hints at the redemptive work of God in their lives. The passage serves as a reminder to trust in God’s providence and seek His guidance in all circumstances.
