Ruth 1:8

Posted on 10 January 2025
Listen to this article

“And Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.”

Context:The book of Ruth takes place during the time of the judges in Israel, a period characterized by moral and spiritual decline. Ruth is a Moabite woman who married an Israelite man named Mahlon while he was living in Moab. Tragically, Mahlon, along with his brother and father, died, leaving behind his wife Ruth and his mother Naomi.

Naomi’s Grief and Decision:In Ruth 1:8, we see Naomi addressing her two daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah. After the deaths of their husbands, Naomi encourages them to return to their own families and find new husbands. Naomi acknowledges their kindness and loyalty towards their deceased husbands and herself.

Naomi’s Blessing:Naomi imparts a blessing upon Ruth and Orpah, saying, “the Lord deal kindly with you.” This demonstrates Naomi’s genuine concern and love for her daughters-in-law. She acknowledges their past kindness and prays that God would show them kindness in return.

Lessons from Ruth 1:8:

  • Grief and Loss:The verse highlights the reality of grief and loss in our lives. Naomi had experienced great tragedy, losing her husband and both her sons. It reminds us that life can bring unexpected hardships and sorrow.
  • Selflessness and Sacrifice:Naomi’s concern for Ruth and Orpah’s well-being demonstrates selflessness. Despite her own grief, she encourages them to go back to their families, recognizing that it may be better for them to find new husbands and have a stable future.
  • Kindness and Loyalty:Naomi acknowledges the kindness and loyalty shown by Ruth and Orpah towards their deceased husbands and herself. It reminds us of the value of showing kindness and loyalty in our relationships, even during difficult times.
  • Trusting in God’s Kindness:Naomi’s prayer for God’s kindness upon Ruth and Orpah reflects her faith in God’s provision and care. It reminds us to trust in God’s goodness and seek His blessings in our lives.

Application:

  • Support in Times of Grief:Ruth 1:8 teaches us to provide support and encouragement to those who are grieving. We should show empathy and care, as Naomi did for Ruth and Orpah.
  • Selflessness in Relationships:The verse challenges us to prioritize the well-being of others over our own desires and interests. It reminds us to be selfless and sacrificial in our relationships.
  • Cultivate Kindness and Loyalty:We should strive to be kind and loyal to others, especially during difficult times. Acts of kindness and loyalty can make a significant impact on the lives of those around us.
  • Trusting in God’s Kindness:Just as Naomi trusted in God’s kindness, we should also trust in His provision and care. We can seek His blessings in our lives and rely on His faithfulness.

By studying Ruth 1:8, we can gain insights into themes of grief, selflessness, kindness, loyalty, and trusting in God’s kindness. It encourages us to extend love and support to those in need and reminds us of God’s faithfulness even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
