Ruth 2:13

Listen to this article

"Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens."

Context:The Book of Ruth tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who showed remarkable loyalty and devotion to her mother-in-law, Naomi, after the death of their husbands. In this verse, Ruth expresses gratitude and appreciation for the kindness and favour she has received from Boaz, a close relative of Naomi’s late husband.

Acknowledging Favour:Ruth acknowledges the favour she has found in the eyes of Boaz. She recognises that Boaz has shown her kindness and comforted her during a difficult time in her life. This acknowledgment highlights Ruth’s humility and gratitude, as she acknowledges that she is not entitled to such favour.

A Plea for Continued Favour:Ruth expresses her desire to continue finding favour in Boaz’s sight. She respectfully refers to him as “my lord” and seeks to be treated with kindness and favour despite not being from the same cultural background or social standing as the other women who worked in Boaz’s fields.

Recognising Uncommon Kindness:Ruth acknowledges that Boaz has spoken kindly to her, which sets her apart from the other women. She appreciates that he has treated her with respect and dignity, even though she is a foreigner and an outsider.

Application of the Verse:Ruth’s response to Boaz teaches us several important lessons. Firstly, it reminds us of the significance of expressing gratitude for the kindness and favour we receive from others. We should not take the acts of kindness for granted, but rather acknowledge them with humility and thankfulness.

Secondly, Ruth’s attitude demonstrates the power of kindness and compassion in our interactions with others. Boaz’s kindness and friendly words made a significant impact on Ruth, providing her with comfort and encouragement. As followers of God, we are called to show kindness and compassion to those around us, irrespective of their background or social standing.

Lastly, Ruth’s plea for continued favour reminds us of our need to rely on God’s grace and favour in our lives. Just as Ruth depended on Boaz’s kindness, we should depend on God’s favour and seek it earnestly through prayer and a humble heart.

Overall, Ruth 2:13 encourages us to cultivate an attitude of gratitude, to treat others with kindness and compassion, and to rely on God’s favour in our lives.
