Ruth 2:6

Listen to this article

“And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab.”

Background and Context:The Book of Ruth is a beautiful narrative found in the Old Testament. It tells the story of Ruth, a Moabite woman, and her journey of faith, loyalty, and love. Ruth’s story takes place during the time of the judges, a period of Israel’s history characterised by moral and spiritual decline.

The Setting:In Ruth 2:6, we find Ruth in the field of Boaz, a wealthy landowner and relative of her deceased husband’s family. Ruth had returned with her mother-in-law, Naomi, from Moab to Bethlehem, seeking refuge and hoping for provision.

Observations:

  • The servant’s recognition:In this verse, we see one of Boaz’s servants identifying Ruth as “the Moabitish damsel.” This indicates that Ruth was still known as a foreigner, a Moabite, even though she had returned to Bethlehem with Naomi. It emphasises her outsider status and sets the stage for the subsequent events.
  • Ruth’s reputation:The servant’s identification of Ruth implies that she had become a subject of conversation among the workers in the field. It suggests that Ruth had already made an impression due to her commitment to taking care of Naomi and her diligent work ethic.

Key Themes and Lessons:

  • God’s providence:Although Ruth was a foreigner, God’s hand was at work in her life. He led her to the field of Boaz, where she would find favour and protection. This verse highlights God’s sovereignty in orchestrating circumstances for the benefit of His people.
  • Ruth’s character:Ruth’s loyalty and commitment to Naomi are admirable. She willingly embraced the God of Israel and devoted herself to caring for her mother-in-law. Her faithfulness and humility are traits that we can learn from and apply in our own lives.
  • Overcoming prejudice:Ruth faced prejudice and discrimination as a Moabite in Israel. However, her hard work and upright character began to change people’s perceptions of her. This serves as a reminder that our actions and attitudes can challenge prejudice and help build bridges across cultural and social barriers.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s providence:Like Ruth, we should trust in God’s leading and provision in our lives. Even in difficult circumstances, God can work all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
  • Demonstrate loyalty and commitment:Ruth’s loyalty to Naomi is an example of sacrificial love and selflessness. We can show similar devotion to our loved ones and to God’s family, the Church.
  • Overcome prejudice and show love:Ruth’s story challenges us to overcome prejudices and extend love and kindness to those who may be considered outsiders or different from us. We should strive to treat everyone with dignity and respect, embracing the values of inclusivity and acceptance.

In conclusion, Ruth 2:6 reminds us of God’s providence, Ruth’s character, and the importance of overcoming prejudice. It encourages us to trust in God, demonstrate loyalty and commitment, and show love to all people.
