Ruth 2:8

Listen to this article

“Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens.”

Background and Context:The book of Ruth is set during the time of the judges in Israel, a period characterised by moral and spiritual decline. Ruth, a Moabite woman, became a widow after her husband died, and she chose to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, instead of returning to her own people. Ruth’s loyalty and faithfulness led her to glean in the fields to provide for their needs.

Boaz’s Encouragement:In Ruth 2:8, we see Boaz, a wealthy relative of Naomi, addressing Ruth directly. Boaz took notice of Ruth’s diligent work and her commitment to caring for Naomi. He spoke kindly to her, referring to her as “my daughter,” expressing a fatherly affection and concern for her well-being.

Guidance and Provision:Boaz instructed Ruth not to go to another field to glean but to stay in his field and remain close to his female workers. This guidance was significant because it ensured Ruth’s safety and allowed her to benefit from the abundance of Boaz’s field.

Boaz’s Benevolence:By inviting Ruth to glean in his field and providing her with protection, Boaz demonstrated a generous and compassionate nature. His actions went beyond what was required by the law, showing a genuine care for Ruth’s welfare. Boaz’s concern for Ruth foreshadows the role he would play in their future relationship.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s Provision:Ruth’s encounter with Boaz reveals God’s provision in times of need. Ruth’s faithfulness and hard work led her to the right place, where she found favour and blessing. God orchestrates events and guides our steps, often using people as instruments of His provision.
  • Divine Guidance:Boaz’s instruction for Ruth to stay in his field can be seen as an example of God’s guidance in our lives. Just as Boaz directed Ruth, God provides direction and wisdom for us. When we seek His guidance and follow His leading, He will lead us to the right places and opportunities.
  • God’s Kindness:Boaz’s compassionate treatment of Ruth reminds us of God’s kindness towards His children. His concern for Ruth’s well-being shows how God cares for us and watches over us, often using others to bless and help us in our journey.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Provision:The story of Ruth encourages us to trust in God’s provision even in difficult circumstances. Just as Ruth remained faithful and diligent, we should continue to seek God’s guidance, trusting that He will provide for our needs.
  • Display Kindness and Compassion:Boaz’s kindness and compassion towards Ruth serve as a reminder for us to extend the same to others. We should be attentive to the needs of those around us, offering help and support when possible.
  • Follow God’s Guidance:Ruth’s obedience to Boaz’s instruction is an example for us to follow God’s guidance. As we seek His will through prayer and study of His Word, let us be willing to act in obedience, trusting that He knows what is best for us.

In summary, Ruth 2:8 demonstrates Boaz’s kindness, guidance, and provision in Ruth’s life. It also teaches us to trust in God’s provision, display kindness and compassion, and follow God’s guidance in our own lives.
