Ruth 2:9

Posted on 10 January 2025
Listen to this article

“Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.”

Context:The book of Ruth tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who, after the death of her husband, accompanies her mother-in-law Naomi to Bethlehem. Ruth finds favour in the eyes of Boaz, a wealthy landowner, as she gleans in his fields to provide for herself and Naomi. Ruth 2:9 is part of a conversation between Boaz and Ruth, where Boaz reassures her of his protection and provision.

God’s Provision:In this verse, Boaz assures Ruth that she is safe in his fields. He instructs her to keep her eyes on the field where the reapers are working and to follow them. This shows God’s provision through Boaz, as Ruth is allowed to glean in his field and benefit from the harvest.

God’s Protection:Boaz not only provides for Ruth but also promises her protection. He assures her that he has charged his young men not to touch her. This demonstrates God’s care and protection over Ruth in her vulnerable position as a foreigner and a widow.

Hospitality and Kindness:Boaz’s instructions to Ruth also include offering her refreshment when she is thirsty. He tells her to go to the vessels and drink from what the young men have drawn. This reveals Boaz’s hospitality and kindness towards Ruth, demonstrating his concern for her well-being.

Application:Ruth’s experience with Boaz can be seen as a reflection of God’s faithfulness and provision in our lives. Just as Boaz provided for and protected Ruth, God cares for His people. He watches over them, guides them, and ensures their needs are met. This verse encourages us to trust in God’s provision and protection, even in difficult circumstances.

In summary, Ruth 2:9 showcases God’s provision, protection, and the kindness of Boaz towards Ruth. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in our lives, encouraging us to trust in Him for our needs and to find comfort in His care.
