Ruth 3:14

Listen to this article

“And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.”

Context:The book of Ruth is a beautiful narrative found in the Old Testament. It tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who, after the death of her husband, chooses to stay with her Israelite mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth’s faithfulness and devotion to Naomi lead her to encounter Boaz, a close relative of Naomi, who becomes her kinsman-redeemer.

Cultural Background:In the ancient Near East, custom and tradition played significant roles in various aspects of life, including marriage and inheritance. The phrase “lay at his feet” refers to a culturally significant act that Ruth performed, signifying her humble and vulnerable position. Ruth came to Boaz at the threshing floor, where he would have been working, and lay at his feet, essentially presenting herself as a potential wife and seeking his protection and provision.

Ruth’s Act of Faith:Ruth’s decision to lay at Boaz’s feet reflects her trust in God’s guidance and her willingness to follow the customs of her new people. It was a bold move, demonstrating her hope for redemption and a desire to fulfil her duty to her deceased husband and Naomi. Ruth’s faith and courage in taking this step of faith are commendable.

Boaz’s Response:Boaz’s reaction to Ruth’s presence is important to note. His concern about not letting it be known that a woman came to the threshing floor reveals his integrity and respect for Ruth’s reputation. Boaz acknowledges Ruth’s bold act, but he handles the situation with honour and wisdom, ensuring that Ruth is not exposed to any unnecessary shame or scandal.

Lessons for Today:

  • Trusting God’s Guidance:Ruth’s actions teach us the importance of trusting in God’s guidance, even when the path ahead seems uncertain or challenging. By stepping out in faith, Ruth positioned herself for God’s favour and provision.
  • Boldness and Humility:Ruth’s approach to Boaz demonstrates a balance of boldness and humility. She boldly sought out Boaz, but her humble act of lying at his feet exemplifies her willingness to submit to God’s plan and the cultural norms of the time.
  • Integrity and Respect:Boaz’s response teaches us the importance of integrity and respect in our interactions with others. He valued Ruth’s reputation and sought to protect it, showcasing his character and righteousness.
  • Redeemer’s Heart:The book of Ruth also foreshadows the redemptive work of Christ. Boaz, as a kinsman-redeemer, becomes a picture of Jesus, who ultimately redeems us through His sacrificial love. Ruth’s journey from a foreign land to becoming part of God’s chosen people illustrates the spiritual redemption available to all who trust in Christ.
