Ruth 4:21

Listen to this article

“And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed.”

Contextual Background:The book of Ruth is a narrative of God’s providence, redemption, and faithfulness. Ruth, a Moabite woman, became part of the lineage of Jesus Christ through her faith, loyalty, and obedience. Chapter 4 concludes the story with Boaz redeeming Ruth and their union resulting in the birth of Obed, who becomes part of the genealogy of David and ultimately Christ.

Key Themes

  • Genealogy and Redemption:This verse connects Boaz to the larger plan of God’s redemption. Salmon (the father of Boaz) is traditionally associated with Rahab, the Canaanite woman who was redeemed during the conquest of Jericho. Boaz, in turn, becomes a kinsman-redeemer, marrying Ruth and fathering Obed, who would continue the line leading to King David and the Messiah.
  • God’s Sovereignty in History:The genealogy here is not incidental; it reflects how God orchestrates history for His purposes. Ruth’s inclusion, despite her Moabite origin, demonstrates God’s heart for all nations and His sovereign ability to work through unexpected people and circumstances.
  • Faithfulness and Legacy:Boaz’s actions, rooted in faith and obedience to God’s law, result in a legacy far beyond his lifetime. His faithfulness not only redeemed Ruth but also established a line through which God would bring about His ultimate Redeemer, Jesus Christ.
  • The Role of Women in God’s Plan:Ruth, a foreign woman of faith, is highlighted in the genealogy of Christ. Her story exemplifies how God values faith and character over ethnicity or background.

Theological Reflections

  • God’s Redemptive Plan:This verse is a reminder that God’s plan of redemption spans generations. The mention of Salmon, Boaz, and Obed points to a divine narrative that culminates in Christ, the ultimate Kinsman-Redeemer.
  • Christological Foreshadowing:Boaz’s role as a redeemer prefigures Jesus Christ. Just as Boaz redeemed Ruth, Jesus redeems humanity. The union of Boaz and Ruth, which seemed ordinary, carries extraordinary significance in the grander scheme of salvation history.
  • Inclusivity in God’s Kingdom:Ruth’s inclusion in this lineage reflects the inclusivity of God’s kingdom. Through faith, even those considered outsiders can become part of God’s covenant people.

Application for Today

  • Trust God’s Sovereignty:Like Ruth and Boaz, we can trust that God is at work in the details of our lives, even when the bigger picture is not yet visible.
  • Faithful Obedience Yields Eternal Fruit:Boaz and Ruth’s faithfulness led to a legacy that impacted generations. Our obedience to God’s Word today can have eternal significance.
  • Celebrate God’s Inclusion:Reflect on the fact that God welcomes people from all backgrounds into His family. This should inspire us to share the gospel and embrace others with Christ-like love.
