Ruth 4:6

Listen to this article

"And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it."

Background:The Book of Ruth tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who showed great loyalty and devotion to her Israelite mother-in-law, Naomi. After the death of their husbands, Ruth accompanies Naomi back to Bethlehem. In Chapter 4, Ruth seeks a kinsman-redeemer, someone who could marry her and continue the family line.

Context:In ancient Israel, the kinsman-redeemer was a close relative who had the responsibility to redeem the property or marry the widow of a deceased relative, ensuring the continuation of the family line and inheritance. The kinsman-redeemer had the first right of refusal to redeem the property or marry the widow.

The Kinsman’s Response:When the kinsman is offered the opportunity to redeem the property and marry Ruth, he initially shows interest. However, upon realizing that it would jeopardize his own inheritance, he declines the offer, giving Boaz, another close relative, the opportunity to step forward.

Lessons from Ruth 4:6:

  • Faithfulness:Ruth’s story highlights her faithfulness and dedication to her mother-in-law. She is willing to go through the process of finding a kinsman-redeemer and patiently waits for God’s provision.
  • Sacrifice:The kinsman-redeemer’s response reflects a reluctance to sacrifice his own inheritance for the sake of others. It reminds us that sometimes fulfilling our responsibilities may require us to make personal sacrifices.
  • God’s Providence:God’s providential care is evident throughout the story of Ruth. Even though the initial kinsman-redeemer declines, God ensures that Boaz, a man of character and integrity, fulfills his role and marries Ruth, leading to the eventual inclusion of Ruth in the genealogy of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5).
  • God’s Timing:The timing of events in Ruth’s life demonstrates God’s perfect timing. The kinsman-redeemer’s refusal paves the way for Boaz to fulfill his role, highlighting the sovereignty and guidance of God in orchestrating circumstances according to His divine plan.

Application:

  • Faithfulness and Loyalty:We can learn from Ruth’s faithfulness and loyalty to God and others. Like Ruth, we should remain steadfast and committed to our responsibilities and relationships, even in challenging circumstances.
  • Sacrificial Love:The kinsman-redeemer’s hesitation prompts us to consider whether we are willing to make personal sacrifices for the sake of others. Love often involves selflessness and going beyond our own interests to care for others.
  • Trusting God’s Timing:Ruth’s story encourages us to trust in God’s timing and providence. Sometimes, things may not work out as we expect, but God is in control, and He can turn our situations around for our good and His glory.

Remember, studying the Bible involves examining the context, understanding the cultural background, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It’s also beneficial to explore other related passages to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biblical message.
