1 Chronicles 1:31

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

Ietur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sonnes of Ishmael. 1 Chronicles 1:31 (KJV)

“Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: these are the sons of Ishmael.” This verse is part of the genealogical record found in the book of 1 Chronicles. The book of Chronicles is a historical account that traces the genealogy of the Israelites, focusing primarily on the lineage of the tribes of Judah and Levi. It emphasizes the importance of the Davidic lineage and the establishment of the temple in Jerusalem. In this particular verse, we encounter the descendants of Ishmael, who was the son of Abraham and Hagar. Ishmael is considered the father of the Arab nations. The names mentioned here are his sons: Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

Jetur: The name ‘Jetur’ means ‘enclosed’ or ‘encampment.’ It is likely that Jetur became the head of a prominent Arabian tribe or clan.

Jetur: The meaning of the name “Jetur” is uncertain; some scholars associate it with a location or tribe, and Jetur likely headed an Arabian clan.

Naphish: The name ‘Naphish’ means ‘refreshment’ or ‘renewal.’

Naphish: The meaning of the name “Naphish” is not clearly established; its descendants are listed among Ishmael’s offspring in biblical genealogies.

Kedemah: The name ‘Kedemah’ means ‘eastern’ or ‘ancient.’

Kedemah: The name “Kedemah” is linked to the Hebrew root meaning “east” or “ancient,” suggesting an eastern locale for the clan. This passage provides a glimpse into the lineage of Ishmael and his descendants, highlighting the diverse tribes and clans that originated from him. It serves as a reminder of the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham, who was blessed with many descendants through his son Ishmael. Genealogical records in the Bible often establish historical and ancestral connections and emphasize the fulfillment of God’s promises and prophecies. The genealogy of Ishmael demonstrates the expansion and development of his descendants into various tribes and groups throughout history. As we study these genealogical passages, it is important to remember that the Bible contains a wealth of information, and each verse contributes to the larger narrative of God’s redemptive plan for humanity.
