1 Chronicles 1:40

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

The sonnes of Shobal: Atian, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. And the sonnes of Zibeon: Aiah, and Anah. 1 Chronicles 1:40 (KJV)

1 Chronicles 1:40 is part of the extensive genealogical record that opens the book of 1 Chronicles. The first chapter traces the lineage from Adam through Noah’s son Shem, continues through Abraham, and reaches the descendants of Jacob (Israel) as well as the Edomite kings, extending even to the period of the Israelites’ return from exile in Babylon. In this verse the focus narrows to the descendants of Seir the Horite, a people who inhabited the land of Edom.

The passage first lists the sons of Shobal, who was himself a son of Seir the Horite. The names given are Alian, Manahath, Ebal, Shephi, and Onam, each representing an individual branch within Shobal’s family. The second clause shifts to the sons of Zibeon, another descendant of Seir. Zibeon’s sons are named as Aiah and Anah. Anah is further noted in Genesis 36:2 as the father of Oholibamah, who later became a wife of Esau, linking this genealogy to the broader narrative of Israel’s ancestors.

Although such genealogical entries may appear merely as historical data, they serve an important purpose in the biblical narrative. They establish the relationships among various peoples and families, providing the background against which later events unfold. Moreover, the steady preservation of these lines underscores God’s faithfulness in maintaining a chosen lineage that would ultimately bring forth the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Thus, this brief verse, while concise, contributes to the larger tapestry of Scripture by recording the lineage of the Horite families and reinforcing the continuity of God’s redemptive plan throughout generations.
