1 Chronicles 1:43

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“Now these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel; Bela the son of Beor: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, let’s establish some context. The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and is a historical record of the genealogies of the Israelites, starting from Adam and leading up to the time of the Babylonian exile. Chapter 1 lists the genealogy of Adam through various generations.

Verse:1 Chronicles 1:43 (KJV) states: “Now these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel; Bela the son of Beor: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.”

The significance of the verse:This verse highlights the line of kings that reigned in the land of Edom before the Israelites had kings of their own. It specifically mentions Bela, the son of Beor, who ruled in the city of Dinhabah. This genealogical record not only provides historical information but also emphasizes the sovereignty of God in establishing kings and kingdoms.

Historical background:Edom was the region southeast of Israel inhabited by the descendants of Esau, Jacob’s twin brother. Esau was also known as Edom. The mention of these early kings of Edom helps establish the historical background and lineage of the Edomite people, who would later have interactions with the Israelites.

Comparison with Israel:The verse draws a contrast between the Edomite kings and the kings of Israel. It emphasizes that the Edomites had established a line of kings before the Israelites had any kings. This may highlight the significance and uniqueness of Israel’s kingship under God’s chosen line, starting with Saul, David, and Solomon.

Theological reflection:The verse indirectly highlights God’s sovereignty over the nations and their rulers. It demonstrates that even before the establishment of the Israelite monarchy, God was already at work in other nations, raising up and deposing kings according to His purposes. This echoes the biblical theme that God is the ultimate ruler over all the earth.

In conclusion, 1 Chronicles 1:43 provides a glimpse into the genealogy of the Edomite kings before the reign of the Israelite kings. While it may seem like a minor detail, it underscores God’s sovereignty and His overarching plan throughout history. As we study the Bible, it is important to consider the context, historical background, and theological implications of each verse to gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word.
