1 Chronicles 10:11
And when all Iabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul: 1 Chronicles 10:11 (KJV)
This verse is found in the context of recounting the events surrounding the death of King Saul, the first king of Israel. In the preceding verses the Philistines fought against Israel and the battle intensified against Saul and his sons. Saul’s three sons, including Jonathan, were killed, and Saul himself was mortally wounded and feared falling into the hands of the enemy.
Jabesh‑gilead was a city on the east side of the Jordan River, within the territory of the tribe of Gad. Its inhabitants were known for bravery and loyalty. Earlier the people of Jabesh‑gilead had been rescued by Saul from the Ammonites (1 Samuel 11:1‑11), and they later showed loyalty to the tribe of Benjamin in a time of crisis (Judges 21:8‑14). In the context of 1 Chronicles 10:11 we see that news of Saul’s defeat and death reached these people.
The verse therefore sets the stage for the subsequent account in which the valiant men of Jabesh‑gilead journeyed all night to retrieve the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of the city of Beth‑shan. They brought the bodies back to Jabesh‑gilead and gave them a proper burial, displaying respect, reverence, and honor for the fallen king. Their actions reflect the cultural importance of burying the deceased properly in ancient Israel.
This passage serves as a reminder of the importance of loyalty and honor even in difficult circumstances. It highlights the lasting impact of Saul’s life and his connection to the people of Jabesh‑gilead, who were willing to risk their lives to honor him and his family. The narrative offers an example of faithful devotion and the significance of giving the dead a dignified burial.
