1 Chronicles 11:28

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, the armourbearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah.”

1 Chronicles 11:28 is a verse found in the Old Testament book of Chronicles, which provides a detailed account of the reign of King David and the establishment of his kingdom in Israel.

This verse specifically mentions three individuals: Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, and the armor-bearer of Joab, the son of Zeruiah.

Zelek the Ammonite:The mention of Zelek as an Ammonite suggests that he was from the nation of Ammon, which was located east of the Jordan River. It is interesting to note that he served in the army of King David, who was from the tribe of Judah. This demonstrates that David had a diverse group of warriors serving under his leadership, which contributed to the strength and unity of his kingdom.

Naharai the Beerothite:Naharai is identified as a Beerothite, indicating that he was from the town of Beeroth. Beeroth was one of the cities of the Gibeonites, who had made a covenant with the Israelites during the time of Joshua (Joshua 9). It is likely that Nahari was one of the descendants of the Gibeonites who became loyal to King David and served as a valiant warrior in his army.

The armor-bearer of Joab, the son of Zeruiah:Joab was one of King David’s most prominent and trusted military commanders. Zeruiah was Joab’s mother and the sister of David. This verse mentions the armor-bearer of Joab, which signifies the importance of this position. An armor-bearer was responsible for carrying and protecting the armor of their master, as well as assisting them in battle. This indicates that the armor-bearer mentioned here was a trusted and loyal servant of Joab, and by extension, of King David.

Overall, this verse highlights the diversity and loyalty among David’s warriors. It shows that individuals from different backgrounds and nations were united in their service to David, contributing to the establishment and expansion of his kingdom.

It also emphasises the importance of loyalty, trust, and the significant role of supportive individuals like armor-bearers in the life of a leader.
