1 Chronicles 11:46

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai, and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the lineage of David and the establishment of his kingdom. Chapter 11 specifically highlights the mighty men who served under David and contributed to his victories.

Eliel the Mahavite:Eliel is mentioned here as one of the warriors who served David. While not much is known about him beyond this reference, his inclusion among the mighty men signifies his valor and loyalty.

Jeribai:Jeribai is listed along with Eliel as one of the sons of Elnaam. Like Eliel, not much else is known about Jeribai. However, his mention emphasises the various individuals who contributed to David’s army and his success as a king.

Joshaviah:Similarly, Joshaviah is named as one of the sons of Elnaam. As with the previous two warriors, limited information is available about Joshaviah beyond this mention. Nevertheless, his presence underscores the diverse backgrounds of those who joined forces with David.

Ithmah the Moabite:Ithmah is identified as a Moabite, hailing from the region of Moab. This is significant because Moabites were typically regarded as outsiders or foreigners in relation to the people of Israel. However, David’s ability to gather loyal warriors from various backgrounds demonstrates his leadership and the unifying power of God’s anointing.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 11:46 serves as a reminder that David’s army was composed of individuals from diverse backgrounds who united under his leadership. The inclusion of Ithmah the Moabite also highlights the expansive reach of God’s grace and how it transcends societal boundaries.

It is important to note that while this verse provides historical information about these individuals, its significance within the broader narrative of the Bible lies in showcasing God’s faithfulness to David and his plan for establishing the kingdom of Israel.
